American silver cup given by Henry Irving £SOLD
An interesting American silver two handled cup by Gorham of Providence, Rhode Island. Marked underneath with their lion and anchor marks, pattern number A382, and engraved 2 1/2 Pints. Presentation inscription to the front. 6.75 inches high; 18.48 ounces.
The inscription reads “A loving cup from Chicago. F C Burnand from Henry Irving Xmas 1901” engraved in facsimile of Henry Irving’s handwriting.
Henry Irving (1838-1905) was born in Keinton Mandeville, Somerset, and went on to become an internationally renowned actor. F C Burnand was a writer of light-hearted plays, and was editor of Punch magazine 1880-1906.
